Whenever a significant honors show approaches, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
