EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
